Preparing network configurations for IPv6 renumbering
نویسندگان
چکیده
The difficulty of renumbering a network – i.e., adding and removing an IP prefix due to a provider change or a network merging – is a real issue for most network administrators. It is even considered by a lot of people as a bottleneck issue in adopting Provider Aggregatable addressing for IPv6. In this paper, we propose a set of macros that can be used in configuration files to permit network administrators to write generic configurations that are independent from the public IPv6 prefixes allocated to their network. We apply our macros to key configuration files, namely firewall access lists, DNS and DHCP based on observations made from real networks.

This document briefly introduces the existing mechanisms that could be utilized for IPv6 site renumbering and tries to cover most of the explicit issues and requirements associated with IPv6 renumbering. The content is mainly a gap analysis that provides a basis for future works to identify and develop solutions or to stimulate such development as appropriate. The gap analysis is organized by t...

IPv6 is an Internet Layer protocol for packet-switched networks providing endto-end datagram transmission across multiple domains. IPv6 was formally described for the first time in the Request for Comments (RFC) 2460, published in December 1998. In addition to offering a larger addressing space, IPv6 also defines some features not present in the previous version of the protocol (IPv4). For exam...

Status of This Memo This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of this memo is unlimited. Abstract This document describes a procedure that can be used to renumber a network from one prefix to another. It uses IPv6's intrinsic ability to assign multiple addresses to a network interface to provide continuity of ne...
